For women over 50 looking in the mirror and seeing gravity take its toll as they age is not much fun, but is it possible to really fight back? In this article, I am going to talk about one of the latest skin tightening and contouring treatments which suggests we can combat those ageing jowls.
Ultherapy is a skin tightening treatment, which uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the body’s own collagen production. Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared procedure to non-invasively lift the eyebrow, neck and under-chin. And, recently, it has been FDA-cleared to improve décolletage lines and wrinkles!
The Ultherapy platform has been developed to be both more comfortable and more effective than other devices available in the market such as Thermage and Korean HIFU machines. It is also the only device that comes with the patented DeepSEE imaging technology that gives me a real time view of the deep layers below the skin and allows me to see where the treatment energy will be delivered.
Though some visible lifting and tightening can be seen immediately after the treatment, the skin structure needs some time to respond to the treatment through a process known as neocollagenesis, which simply means “new collagen creation”. As well as tightening, the treatment is also able to contour the face.
A few months to achieve full results may seem like a long time initially, but what we have to keep in mind is that, unlike Botox and Fillers, which just hide the visible signs of ageing temporarily for a few months, Ultherapy results is a reversal of “skin age”. Plus, whatever improvement we get is ours to keep, and the only thing that can take is away is the natural aging process that we all have to face. But, with a good lifestyle and a healthy diet, this can take a few years. So, repeating Ultherapy treatment every 1-2 years can keep our “skin age” younger than our physical age.
The treatment process
After cleansing the skin and identifying the specific areas to be treated, ultrasound gel is applied and the smooth treatment applicator is placed against the skin. Next, your doctor will use Ultherapy’s ultrasound imaging to first see deep within the skin to determine optimal placement of the treatment energy, and then deliver the focused ultrasound energy beneath the skin’s surface.
Comfort levels can vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the energy is being delivered. To be perfectly honest, this may not be the most comfortable cosmetic treatment you’ve ever had. The treatment can be set at different levels of intensity/heat. Within reason, the higher the level you can withstand, the greater the effectiveness of the treatment. But, so far, my patients who have tried both Thermage or HIFU before Ultherapy have found that Ultherapy treatment is far more comfortable.
The length of your treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes, while treatment of just the jowls and jawline takes approximately 30 minutes.
The great thing about Ultherapy is that there is no downtime! You can return to your normal activities immediately after your procedure without any post-treatment restrictions or requirements.
Your skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature. In fact, I would be more concerned if my patients felt no discomfort at all as that could mean that the treatment intensity was insufficient.
You don’t have to subscribe to the philosophy of “No Pain, No Gain” with Ultherapy, but we may have to re-word it to “A Little Pain Is Worth It For A Lot Of Gains”!
