What are brown spots, Melasma and freckles?

A brown spot is due to changes in pigmentation and there are several types. A solar lentigo also known as a sun spot appears as a brown spot on the skin that is darker than the surrounding skin. It is due to sun exposure and is most common in areas of the skin exposed to the sun such as the hands and face.

Melasma is also known as the “mask of pregnancy”. It is a brown discoloration that is often caused by hormonal changes and is more common in women. This can appear as dark irregular patches usually on the upper cheeks, forehead, nose and lips. Darker skinned people are more prone to developing melasma as a reaction to sun exposure.

Freckles are small brown spots on sun-exposed areas. Some people are genetically more susceptible to developing freckles.
