Manual follicular unit extraction is considered to be one of the best methods of surgical hair restoration. It is also the technique that requires the highest amount of precision, skill, and artistry. Due to the manual dexterity required, many surgeons use robotic-assisted technologies.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a permanent solution to baldness using the technology in hair transplantation. There are minimal scarring, short down time, and lesser pain.

There are many causes of hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss is hereditary androgenetic alopecia known as “male pattern baldness”. The presence of (DHT) hormone contributes to common baldness. Common male baldness generally evolves hair loss away from the face and the top of head. Women may also experience hair loss due to hereditary female pattern hair loss. Women may suffer from hair loss during menopause or 3 months after childbirth. Other less common causes of hair loss are thyroid disease, iron deficiencies, lack of nutrition, childbirth, surgery and certain medication.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the gold standard for permanent hair transplant. The procedure carries much lesser risk. It heals much faster as the wound although many but they are very small. It scabs within a week. There is usually no scar. The main weakness of FUE is that its very time consuming and demanding on the operator. It takes skill and technique to be able to extract the hair roots individually and in an efficient speed.

A large majority of patients (90%) were satisfied with their hair transplantation procedures”.

How is the procedure done?

The hair follicles from the back of the head are transplanted to bald areas in front. The hair follicles at the back of the hair are more resistant to the hormone changes that cause the loss of hair follicles in the front. The procedure is performed under LA and involves extraction of hair follicle from back of the head. Follicular hair units with 1-3 hair are then implanted into the bald areas using Omnigraft Implanter.

What can I expect after the procedure?

Patient able to go back to work the next day-he/she may have to cover the shaved area.

The results are expected to show in 2-6 months as the transplanted hair stablize and start growing.

It is to be expected that the hair will not grow immediately after the procedure. After 4 weeks, you can expect to see initial growth but also expect the hair grafts to gradually shed off after that time. This is the natural process of transplanted hair grafts. The hair will start growing back after 3-4 months slowly. After 3-4 months, a patient usually sees 10% more hair in succeeding months, until full coverage. The final results can be expected after a year.

How is this procedure compared to ARTAS Robotic FUE Hair Transplant?

ARTAS is another technology that some doctors use for follicular unit extraction. Theoretically, the ARTAS system has an advantage because the robotic device cannot become fatigued during extractions. However, this very crucial step requires a keen eye for the angle of individual hair follicle angles beneath the skin that is an artistic insight that is only possible when an human is performing the procedure.

Extraction with ARTAS is also much slower, and it doesn’t offer the same level of precision required for optimal aesthetic results. ARTAS typically uses a larger punch size when extracting grafts (which can increase scarring), and it tends to be limited in its ability to maximize the potential donor areas fully.

Are the results permanent?
